I chose this career path because

I have been in culinary arts for 8 years as a professional, however I have had a passion for culinary arts and food for as long as I can remember. My ancestors were all culinary artists, one was actually in Quality Control of the food being served to the royal family of India! This career just came natural to me.

I prepared for this career by

Through jobtrainworks.org , I received a diploma in Culinary Arts and did an external internship in the commercial sector of food. I also have my M.A. in English Literature from Anna University. I also earned my Certification in Sustainability of Food Systems: A Global Life Cycle Perspective.

The biggest challenge I've overcome

As a woman in this field, I have found that men do not respect you or pay you as they would if you were a man. I have to work doubly as hard just to be taken seriously.

My greatest strength(s)

I am a people person and therefore I can relate well to customers, employees, and students. I have great empathy and I am successful at building a team that will take us to the next level. I also have the ability to step back and identify problems and provide sustainable solutions.

My greatest accomplishment to date

My greatest accomplishment was becoming a chef. I always wanted to be one and coming to this country and achieving that is my dream come true.

My personal/professional goals

We were a pioneer in the area because all of our food is homemade, healthy food. We want to be the solution for people who can not cook or simply don't have the time to cook and provide them with delicious, healthy food. We want to reach every table in our area with our food.

We are accomplishing this in 3 ways: 1)We bought a food truck; 2) We increased marketing in a 20 mile radius; and 3) We are considering starting a line of dry packaged food (e.g Homemade 7-grain cereals, etc.)

What/Who has inspired me the most

My husband and I do a great deal of traveling, and I have to say it truly shocks us that the United States, a country so head of its time in most areas, has a complete lack of healthy foods. I am inspired to do something about that so that our children and future generations to come eat healthier and live healthier.

I most want to be known/remembered for

I want to be remembered as a pioneer in my own field, not as a fancy chef but as a chef people can relate to. I want to be remembered for helping others to start cooking for health. Home cooking is not inferior.

I participate in the following organizations/memberships

The Lions Club of Foster City, Execution team for Breakfast of Champions

I support the missions of these charities/volunteer my time

  • Feeding America
  • Samaritan House
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

I enjoy the following hobbies/interests

I love spending time with my daughter and I am an artist and love drawing.
