Susan Saiyiorri
I chose this career path because
I currently work as a Program Assistant in Bancroft NeuroRehab. Throughout the course of my career I have also been in Real Estate in Nairobi and New Jersey.
My homeland, Kenya, has so many women in dire straits. We formed a large group in the USA and at the second organizational meeting in DC, we realized that we needed to form a smaller group of women in just New Jersey. I have been in healthcare for 6 years and during my stint as a program director, I identified the needs of Kenyan women in the USA. They take care of their families here and back home in Kenya.
My group of the Meru Ladies of the USA and Canada has grown from 10 members to 171 women. The idea is to empower Kenyan women to make their lives profitable in the United States and invest in projects that will increase our financial worth.
I prepared for this career by
I received my A.A. in Psychology and Counseling from Kenya and I have undergone many training courses in Women's Leadership. I an effort to continue my education, I am currently pursuing my B.A. in Operations and Project Management through the University of Southern New Hampshire.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
Personally, my biggest challenge was my deceased ex-husband who was verbally and physically abusive. I was married to him for 19 years and I grew to accept the abuse. It took me 15 years to find the courage to get out of that situation and while that situation was very unfortunate, it also is what gives me great passion to help other women.
My greatest strength(s)
I am a go-getter, resilient, understanding and persistent.
My greatest accomplishment to date
Back in Kenya, I was a founding member of an organization that helped homeless women. We helped them save their money and get them clothing and health insurance for their families. We encouraged them to save enough to purchase a shanty or build homes.
My personal/professional goals
I am hoping that my new group will get involved in several projects and do well financially and give back. Global Food Banking said they will help us and train us, so i am excited for that opportunity!
What/Who has inspired me the most
My inspiration is Mark Zuckerberg. He has made the world a smaller place and turned it into a global village. He makes me feel we can bring hope to this world.
