Melissa Leathery, LSW
About me
I have been in the Mental Health field for 21 years and with Hoffman Homes for Youth for 16 years. At one point, I left Hoffman to do school-based counseling, and eventually came back. I am so passionate about what we do here. I look forward to the future with great excitement, as the CEO is retiring and I have been chosen to assume the role.
About my company
Hoffman Homes for Youth is a non-profit providing psychiatric residential treatment for children and adolescents.
Hoffman Homes for Youth is committed to promoting the personal growth and achievement of the children and families we serve through continuous quality improvement, education, staff development, and the use of evidence-based practices. Our team of caregivers is devoted to creating a culture of healing that enables our children to recover and thrive, and to realize brighter, healthier futures
I chose this career path because
I have a passion for the field and have always had a natural ability to listen, advocate, and counsel. It seems that since High School, I have been counseling friends.
I prepared for this career by
My preparation has been a combination of formal education and mentorship. I received my BA in Social Work from Millersville University and my MSW from Temple University. I have had so many wonderful mentors along the way, even in my supervisory roles, and I continue to learn all the time.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
The majority of leaders in Human Services are men. And while I will say that I am an assertive person, one of the biggest challenges I have faced is making my voice heard and heeded.
I am the first female that has served in a leadership role in this organization, so I imagine that the adjustment for the staff may be somewhat challenging as well.
My greatest strength(s)
I have unwavering, strong morals and values and I just naturally follow our Code of Ethics. I am also passionate about mentoring our staff and helping them realize and grow into their full potential. Additionally I am very dedicated and have great organizational skills.
My greatest accomplishment to date
My greatest accomplishment was getting my MSW when so much was happening at Hoffman. I was doing group therapy, which I loved, and a mentor suggested that I go into case management. At the same time I decided to pursue my Masters. I took a leap of faith, and it is because I made the decision to further my education that I will be CEO next year.
My personal/professional goals
This year I have experienced so much growth and I have learned to see the big picture. I am continually learning more about development and fundraising. As CEO, my goal is to change the culture of the organization through my more personable approach. I want the people I work with to truly feel appreciated and valued. Another big goal of mine is to increase fundraising.
What/Who has inspired me the most
I adore children. They are so vulnerable and innocent and when I think of some of the things these children have gone through at the hands of adults, I am inspired to advocate for them and make their lives better.
I most want to be known/remembered for
I want to be remembered for always putting the needs of the children before anything else so that they may heal and recover.
I support the missions of these charities/volunteer my time
