Maria de Los Angeles Prieto, Lic. Broker
I chose this career path because
When I moved to the United States from Mexico I decided to pursue a career in real estate because I wanted a career that allowed me flexibility and a good work-life balance. It was important for me to have time to spend with my 3 daughter's and be a part of their activities. I started working in the accounting department for a real estate agency and then went on to get my license to sell.
I prepared for this career by
As far as my formal education, I received my Bachelor's of Administration from San Jose State University, my Bachelors of Science in Economics from Canada College, and my PhD in Psychology from The National Autonomous University of Mexico.
As far as my career in Real Estate, I am a licensed Real Estate Broker in the State of California and I am a Certified International Previews Specialist and certified in Commercial Investment. Additionally, I am a Distress Property Specialist and I am Certified as an International President's Elite.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
The biggest challenges I've had is when dealing with male Latinos in this field. There is a definite lack of respect, and some have even basically told me outright that this is a man's field and eluded to the fact that I should "be home in the kitchen".
My greatest strength(s)
My greatest strength is that I can be calm in difficult situations.
My greatest accomplishment to date
My greatest accomplishment is whenever I help someone find resource so they can find a home when they feel they cannot afford to own a home.
My personal/professional goals
This year I opened my own real estate brokerage and I am working hard to increase my marketing efforts. My goal is to hire a good team of capable people and begin training and creating a full service agency.
What/Who has inspired me the most
What inspires me is realizing there are so many people who need help. Another inspiration is supporting the Foundation I founded , Escuela por la Todas, in Mexico. I purchased land and I am building a school there and have two rooms for kids to go who have no home. We ensure they go to school, wear clean clothes and eat properly.
