About me

Author Karen Meyer worked with preschoolers for a number of years, and also as a program coordinator. She wrote songs and dramas for her classes and taught Christian education, along with Sunday school for many years. She lives in Plymouth, Wisconsin with her husband; they have three adult children and eleven grandchildren.

About my company

Her first book, "Hootch" is about a spotted hyena who wants to travel to new lands and explore far away continents, but his parents tell him it is too dangerous to travel alone to an unknown place. Hootch then gets angry and throws a fit as he howls and screams in his room.  "It's not fair! Why can't I travel and see my cousins?" Hootch wonders. After sulking for a while, Hootch realizes he acted poorly to his parents, who love him and tried to protect him. It is then when Hootch must seek their forgiveness and apologize.  A must for children to read!

Her second book, "Looking Forward to Christmas" is about looking back to the birth of Jesus, but how, for centuries, the people of God looked forward.  This book helps parents and teachers review with children how it was for those who looked forward to Jesus, and it helps to show why the celebration of Christmas is so significant.  It is written in poetic form, the short sections are titled to introduce the theme of each.

I chose this career path because

She chose this career path because she wrote in high school, and her English teacher always gave her an A. She always wanted to become an English teacher. She attended college for one year, and then she started her family. She has self-published two books, which both children and adults seem to like. She is now working on a third rhyming book for children. She is presently working on introducing her "Hootch" fantasy book to libraries as well.

I prepared for this career by

Writing has always been her passion. One day her 7-year-old grandson asked her all about hyenas; she took him to the zoo and they took pictures and learned all about hyenas. This gave her the inspiration to write "Hootch."

The biggest challenge I've overcome

Her biggest challenge is not being organized and aggressive; so just getting it done. She has self-published. The writing comes naturally, its the marketing of the books which is a problem.

My greatest strength(s)

Her greatest strength is bringing joy to people's lives. She is very active in her church. She prepares meals, bakes her famous pies, and puts on funny skits for the parishioners to enjoy.

My greatest accomplishment to date

Her greatest accomplishment, personally, is her family.  She has a wonderful, supportive husband, and two daughters and a son. She also has 11 beautiful grandchildren. Professionally, her greatest accomplishment is self-publishing her books.

She is also proud to announce that the West Suburban Women's Christian Club invited her to be a speaker on June 20, 2016.

My personal/professional goals

Her vision is to continue to write children's stories. She enjoys entertaining children.

What/Who has inspired me the most

Her inspiration comes from high school when she had the desire to write. Her creativity, imagination, active mind and inquisitiveness to ask questions help her to write. She loves to entertain my grandchildren!

I most want to be known/remembered for

She wants to be remembered as a Christian, a grandmother and an author.

I have received the following Honors/Awards/Scholarships

She received first prize for her cherry pie.

I support the missions of these charities/volunteer my time

She supports Christian missions in Africa. She is very active in her church; she attends bible class, and her husband is the church organist.

I enjoy the following hobbies/interests

She enjoys writing, walking, gourmet cooking and bird watching. She just got a heated bird bath, and she loves watching the birds use it.
