Karen Bard, GAICD
I chose this career path because
My husband has been my biggest supporter, he expected me to become the COO and after challenges in the oil industry in Australia, I left the company I was working for and I told him I was going to aim higher and become Chairman of the Board! So I went back to school and became a Certified Director and that is when my career snowballed. I found my passion by using my experience and expertise in quality assurance to other organizations.
I prepared for this career by
I completed my training at the following institutions:
- 2007 Graduate Australian Institute of Company Directors with order of Merit
- 1992-96 Doctorate work and Environmental Sciences Minor
- 1992 MSc Petroleum Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, Golden Colorado
- 1981 BSc Petroleum Engineering, University of Missouri Rolla, Rolla Missouri
The biggest challenge I've overcome
I haven't had to fight as hard to have my voice heard as I had finding the right opportunities. Men are offered positions more readily and frequently then women. And, of course striking the balance and finding time to do everything.
My greatest strength(s)
You succeed by making others look good - having them highlight their talents. I think that is the secret to being a good leader is building strong teams. I am a good listener and I take the time to actually hear what people say when they speak, and of course I have common sense and always look to the brighter, lighter side to get things accomplished.
My greatest accomplishment to date
EBL is a huge source of pride for me, as we grew the company that is dedicated to service and support individuals with intellectual disabilities and their
families from childhood through to adulthood is something I am so proud to have led. We turned EBL from a local to a national entity with great benefits to the people who its services. Additionally I am proud of the . the changes we were able to make for the benefit of victims of domestic violence were monumental and far reaching for the women in Australia. I gave them a motto - Dare to make a difference, and we did in every way!
My personal/professional goals
I am looking for new opportunities in the states where I can make a difference.
What/Who has inspired me the most
I am inspired when I see how such a small amount of help can have such a huge impact on someone's life. I am energized by new experiences and love the challenge to change things.
I most want to be known/remembered for
I hope I'm known as a woman who led with humor, kindness and compassion; someone who was always able to find the good and had an impact on the people I helped along the way.
