I chose this career path because of my family. My mother was a teacher and involved in community work and my father a farmer. Education was very important growing up and there were always a lot of books in the house. My parents wanted me to get into music but I saw myself teaching in a classroom setting or nursing. I did take education seriously and was always listening and eager to learn. I got a scholarship to University of Texas and went there as the first Afro American student. I was part of integration. My mom got her MA and all of her seven children got their college degrees.

I did teach in the classroom, was a director for a few companies. I continue to do volunteer and community service as well as mentoring and tutoring.

I prepared for my career by getting my BA in music education, my MA in education and my doctorate in early childhood education. 

The biggest challenge I've overcome is racism and bias. Being an Afro American woman I've worked in that framework. Being considered in your position is the challenge. 

My greatest strength is my journey. Setting the example of a farmer's daughter who persevered and got her doctorate in order to succeed. God is my strength.

My greatest accomplishment to date is being a parent. I am a single parent and my son saw that education was the key. He got a full scholarship to MIT.

My goal is to semi retire but continue to volunteer and serve in the community part time. I want to do some writing as well as pushing institutions and churches to take a stand that education of the young is most important.

My faith in God inspires and motivates me the most. My spirituality is my essence and always keeps me looking up.

I most want to be remembered as a nurturing and loving mother as well as using my education to serve.

I participate in Alumni Chapter-Sorority, Austin Symphonic Chorus and Edwards Alumni Association

In 2014 I received the Unsung Service Award from the University of Texas for my community service, Also Outstanding Achievement Award from Edwards Alumni Association

I support Young Women and Men of Destiny and several churches.

I enjoy singing with the Austin Symphony Chorus, walking and reading outside in nature, and going to the movies.
