Donna Ehlers, MD
About me
I have been in the Healthcare field for 36 years in the area of Psychiatry.
I chose this career path because
I always loved school and been passionate about learning. Medical school afforded me 8 years of schooling and it was something I was passionate about pursuing. Additionally, I knew from early on that I wanted to be able to support myself throughout life. Growing up I watched my mom, who was dependent on my father, and knew I wanted to be more independent and empowered.
Initially, I dabbled with going into family practice and after doing a rotation in that area, I realized that was not for me! My last rotation was in Psychiatry, where I had a Spanish speaking patient who was paranoid and psychotic. They needed someone who spoke Spanish, so I interviewed her. 2 weeks later, she was released and the change in her was dramatic - she was perfect. From then on, I knew it was where I belonged. I was and still am completely fascinated by this field of practice and I love what I do.
I prepared for this career by
I went to UCLA and studied Biochemistry for 4 years and everyone wanted to go to Medical School. While on a vacation, I met students from Mexico and they raved about Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara: UAG Medical School and I decided to get my MD there.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
My biggest challenge was raising and supporting my children and step-children while my husband was not working. We did eventually get divorced, but it was not always easy.
My greatest strength(s)
Among my greatest strengths is my spirituality (I follow the path of Yoga), my ability to mediate, and my genuine love for life. I live each day in the moment.
My greatest accomplishment to date
My greatest accomplishments include graduating from Medical school, being a single mom to wonderful children, becoming a Yogi, and receiving accolades from staff and patients. I am also very proud of the seminars I teach and being as healthy, physically and mentally, as I am!
My personal/professional goals
I want to stay in Kaiser until I am forced to retire at 65 and then spend a month in intensive Yoga and travel.
What/Who has inspired me the most
My Love of God is a great inspiration. Everything is magical and great things happen because of love.
