Diana Monea, Doctor of Optometry
About me
Dr. Diana Monea grew up on a farm near Rockglen, Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Waterloo, graduating with a Doctor of Optometry in 1978. She has since practiced in Regina, Saskatchewan and subsequently opened two clinics in Calgary, Alberta. Over the last 36 years she has developed a close personal relationship with thousands of patients. From her three free-standing optometric clinics she continues to see patients of all ages, many of whom have seen her several times over the span of her busy career.
Dr. Monea is committed to the very best diagnostic procedures, using modern digital imaging equipment in pre-test, which provides a permanent, irrefutable, and highly objective record of eye health and eye conditions commencing with your first exam. Her mission statement is; "to provide the best service and quality care for my patients, always with their best interest in mind; to listen carefully to their concerns and to explain matters concerning eye health to patients in a clear and complete manner."
The Internet has provided a terrific medium for providing patient information as it relates to eye health. Dr. Diana Monea became the first optometrist in Canada to create a website dedicated to the provision of eye health information when she created www.drmonea.com in the summer of 1999. This website has subsequently evolved into www.eyehealthcentres.com.
She became the first optometrist in North America to profile case studies in optometry, beginning in April of 2000. All digital pictures, corneal topography, and field analysis illustrated were drawn from her database of more than 200,000 eye exams she has personally performed.
The coming of age of technology in the field of optometry will never replace the need for the human touch. Not only does Dr. Monea aim to provide the best care for her patients, but she has served as a leader, care giver and volunteer to countless others in many communities. She has given lectures to Univeristy students, seminars to health care workers, and mentored many optometry students. In addition, she has assisted in educating seniors on eye disease prevention, volunteered weekly helping school children to learn to read and practice math, held clinics at the Regina Correctional Centre monthly for 15 years, and assisted at the largest nursing home in Saskatchewan, Pioneer Village.
Dr. Monea is the only optometrist on the E-Team which is the only clinic in Canada that addresses and treats patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. She also spear headed the "Eye See I Learn" program with Dorrie Morrie for Essilor to educate parents about the need for early eye health exams. With additional funding from the Government, this program gives every child who attends kindergarten in Alberta one free pair of spectacles together with an eye-health exam.
In 2010, Dr. Monea received the first-ever “Eyecare Professional (ECP) of the Year” as part of the new Healthy Sight Awards program. Monea was honored for her commitment to the advancement of eye health at a reception during the 14th annual Transitions Academy at Disney’s Beach and Yacht Club Resort in Orlando, Fla. The Healthy Sight Awards program recognizes one independent eyecare professional practice, nominated by a lab, for his or her achievement in four categories throughout the year: sales growth, including share of Transitions® lenses; marketing efforts and promotions; community involvement; and employee education and training. Monea was nominated by Essilor in Calgary and selected as the winner from three finalists representing each of the East, West and Ontario regions.
When not attending to her busy schedule, giving lectures, serving her community, or winning awards, Dr. Monea enjoys modeling on the run way the latest fashion designs from the Alberta designer Holly Allen of Chi-Chi Couture.
Dr. Monea operates full-service optometric practices in Calgary and Regina, specializing in the dispensation of high quality designer eyewear and contact lenses. She features optical boutiques with eclectic and unique selections, with state of the art lenses and contact lenses from the very best manufacturers.
Quality and service are Dr. Monea's priorities.
I chose this career path because
Diana was raised in a remote area in Saskatchewan and chose a career path that would lead her out in to the world.
I prepared for this career by
She attended the University of Waterloo School of Optometry.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
In the late 1970's Diana was in the 1% group of females entering the field of Optometry. She experienced "chauvinism" even in the process of obtaining a loan to start practicing. She had to prove herself in order to obtain financing for her practice. At the time she was known as the "alpha female". The other significant challenge was the balance between the demands of raising a family and her career.
My greatest strength(s)
Diana focuses on patient education and communication making sure her patients receive the highest quality of care and service. She loves her work and she is very passionate about mentoring young female practitioners who also struggle, especially with the issue of balancing family life along with their careers.
My greatest accomplishment to date
Diana says, she is in this "job" whole heartedly and works within the community in several areas. In association with Essilor Vision Foundation, every kindergarten child in Alberta has access to a free eye examination and those who need them receive free eyeglasses.
My personal/professional goals
Diana wants to be able to motivate others to pursue Optometry and to have fun with it. It is more challenging now because eye glasses are available in many ways at lower costs so from a business perspective it has become more difficult.
What/Who has inspired me the most
Diana is greatful for the success she has achieved and is invested in giving back and making a difference. She is inspired to make a difference with each new day.
I most want to be known/remembered for
In mentoring young graduates Diana's emphasis is focused on helping people rather than being about the money.
I participate in the following organizations/memberships
Diana has guided a program that educates parents about early eye exams and has always been involved at the community level.
I have received the following Honors/Awards/Scholarships
