Dawn McGaff
About me
I was in the Oil Industry for 12 years working in Organizational Development and Coordination. I worked for Chevron and Shell in the past. I worked in organizational development for several other companies outside of the oil industry including Scott Paper and Kimberly-Clark. I also had my own consulting firm focused on Organizational Development called People Principles Consulting Company.
5 years ago, I switched gears and entered the Aerospace industry. My son is in Aerospace and my daughter works for Boeing in aerospace engineering.
I chose this career path because
I believe that the structure of the organization is critical to the success of the employees and the company. I chose to put my knowledge to work in the Aerospace industry because it is a great industry.
I prepared for this career by
My preparation has been a hybrid of formal education and experience. I received a great deal of on-the-job training. I received a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from the University of Toledo in Organization Administration & Labor Relations and also received Green Belt Training, Six Sigma Masters Program from Chicago Deming Associates.
I am currently pursuing an MBA from the University of St. Thomas in International Business.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
I fortunately have been successful as a Production Leader in Manufacturing, despite the fact that it is a male dominated industry. However, I have found on occasion, that when working with certain men they tend to address the fellow males at the table, even if I am the one speaking.
My greatest strength(s)
My strengths include quick assessments of situations, building leadership and credibility. Typically organizations view their structure as a triangle with the leadership at the top juncture and employees supporting them below. I view the organizational structure as an upside down triangle, where leadership must balance the structure of the employees in the organization.
My greatest accomplishment to date
My children are my greatest accomplishment. Second to that, I feel most accomplished when I am to bring people back to life from the numbness of their jobs. I try to involve employees in re-commitment to the company through HR and employers.
My personal/professional goals
I plan to continue to maintain my two main blogs, "People Principles" and "Life is Precious, Look Around and Save One", and my additional blog, "Wondrous Moments". After retirement, my goal is to become even busier with my blogs and writing, and to compile a book based on "People Principles".
I also love to play the piano and compose my own music. I have put out 6 CDs, and plan to continue my work with music.
What/Who has inspired me the most
In 2011, I lost my 21 year old child. I am inspired and focused on living and giving freely. Life is precious, and it is not promised. I have dedicated my life to helping others.
In 2013, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and refuse to allow that to define me. I ran two marathons and continue to work and live my life to the fullest.
I most want to be known/remembered for
I would like to be remembered as someone who accepted everyone for who and what they are. I want to be remembered for helping others spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
I participate in the following organizations/memberships
The Organizational Development Network
