Cynthia Durda
I chose this career path because
My Dad was in Oil Field Construction and built houses on the side. I thought I wanted to be a lawyer, however after interning with an attorney's office I knew it was not the path for me - It wasn't at all what I thought it would be and in fact, I was bored by it! I then took a position with a General Contractor and loved it - I became fascinated with construction!
I prepared for this career by
I attended Fullerton College and several other schools and took many courses in construction, however most of what I know I learned by way of experience and on-the-job.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
With 2017 being the year to break the silence that existed regarding sexual harassment, I recalled my own experiences. I remembered working with a contractor who was always rubbing my shoulders and saying, "I could make or break you". At the time I went to Human Resources and within a month I was let go. The construction industry was, and still is, very much male dominated industry, and as woman navigating the waters of the "Good Ole Boys Club" has been challenging.
My greatest strength(s)
My greatest assets include the passion I have for what I do, my ability to move past (and learn from) struggles and my constant yearning for continued knowledge, growth, and advancement in the industry.
My greatest accomplishment to date
My greatest accomplishment is the success I have had in the industry and becoming an active participant in the Lyle Parks Jr. Construction company - I have earned their trust and for that I am proud.
My personal/professional goals
My goal is to retire in about 4 years, and end my career on a high note. I bought a house in Utah and my plan is to eventually leave California and settle in Utah.
Realizing that retirement is a few years away, I want to become more active. This year, I started an organization for women, called Woman to Woman for Women aimed at mentoring women and helping them get through difficult times and realize their greatest potential.
What/Who has inspired me the most
What inspires me is the way my parents raised me. My Dad was a self-made man and both of my parents were very giving of themselves to others. They inspired me to live a life aimed at helping others lead happy and healthy lives.
I most want to be known/remembered for
I want to be remembered for connecting with other women from all walks of life and helping them to realize their greatest potential.
