Dr. Christine Molnar has worked in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging’s Division of Nuclear Medicine since 1985. During that time, she has held a number of positions and appointments. Among them serving as the quality assurance officer at the Foothills Medical Centre from 1990 to 1998 and the Faculty of Medicine’s student advisor from 1993 to 1997.

On three occasions, Dr. Molnar has had ministerial appointments to: the Ministerial Working Group to evaluate the Alberta Managed Imaging Radiology Proposal (1995 to 1996); the Ministerial Task Force to improve mammography screening services in Alberta (1994 to 1995); and the Alberta Breast Screening Policy Council (1995 to 1997).

She was also on the Advisory Committee for Diagnostic Imaging for the Alberta College of Physician and Surgeons (1991 to 1996). From 2001 to 2008, Dr. Molnar was vice-president of the Alberta Society of Radiologists; since 2008, she has served as the society’s president.

In 2007, Dr. Molnar was named the regional division chief of Nuclear Medicine for the Department of Diagnostic Imaging for the Calgary Zone of Alberta Health Services. She continues to hold that position today.

Dr. Molnar’s post-secondary education began at the University of Saskatchewan in Regina, Sask., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in science (microbiology) in 1971. In 1976, she earned her doctor of medicine from the university. Dr. Molnar’s residency in diagnostic radiology was at the University Hospital in Saskatoon, Sask. from 1979 to 1983.

She completed a second residency in nuclear medicine at the Cross Cancer Institute at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton in 1984.

Dr. Molnar was certified in diagnostic radiology in 1983 and in nuclear medicine in 1984 by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Throughout her career, Dr. Molnar has written a number of abstracts and presented to an array or medical and lay audiences.

EFW Radiology was formed in 1969 to provide services at the newly constructed Foothills Medical Centre and teaching at the University of Calgary Medical School. Since then, EFW Radiology has grown, now with more than forty Radiologists who provide subspecialty focused care in Abdominal imaging, Cardiothoracic imaging, Breast Imaging and Biopsy, Musculoskeletal Imaging and Pain Management, Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT,and Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Four Perinatologists provide Maternal Fetal Medicine services and consultations.

EFW Radiology continues to provide services to the Foothills Medical Centre, and now also to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, acute care centers in Calgary, Airdrie and Okotoks and the High River Hospital. The partnership also owns and operates nine community based clinics. The most recent to open is the Advanced Medical Imaging Centre which will provide a variety of specialized services including state of the art MRI. Most of the other clinics are at new locations or have been extensively renovated providing a pleasant environment and up to date equipment. More than 600,000 imaging studies, interventional procedures, second opinions and consultations are performed annually. Regardless of where the studies are performed within the practice, they will be interpreted by the most qualified Radiologist or Perinatologist available.

Christine chose this career path because she wanted to make a substantial contribution to society.

Her biggest challenge has been living a most meaningful life of success, being the top in her field and also having the responsibility of being a successful mother. She also was faced with breast cancer and although that allowed her to be able to better identify with her patients by literally feeling their pain, she still had to keep herself in tact in order to carry on with all of her responsibilities. Another major challenge has been trying to get ahead in a male domineering field.

Her strength is her curiosity,  her love of learning, and problem solving. She is also a high achiever, she has good leadership and coaching skills and is a strong team player.

Her professional goal is to see herself as the key center piece of the functional Brain Imaging Program that she has started for dementia and epilepsy and continuing to grow it. She is also interested in developing her leadership potential by continuing to participate in professional organizations where she presently sits on the board of and hopes to continue to do so.

What inspires her the most is her past experiences in life, her past misfortunes and her desire to give back and make a difference in any small way that she can. Whether it be in the lives of her children or colleagues, either by baking a cake or leading something her life long journey is to bring some light into the world.

Christine wants most to be remembered as  person who touched a lot of people's lives in the world.
