ScentsAbility is an organization that helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) learn job skills and be independent. Our mission is to teach them how to punch in/out for their shift, how to use a cash register, stock shelves, alphabetize, count money, and how to use a computer to ring up a sale. Building a better future for individuals with IDD!

Oh, we forgot to mention they make amazing custom soy candles for ambiance in the home, baby showers, wedding gifts, or as party favors. Or use the mini-tin with custom logo as a calling card for your company or organization.

"Lighting the Path to Independence One Candle at a Time!"

When my daughter Jessica, a special needs student, graduated high school she needed something do, as there were no day programs or support options available to her anymore. She belonged to "the lost group,"  students over 22 years old with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As her parent and an advocate for people with IDD, I started ScentsAbility to offer her a purpose her own path to independence - and of course, a job!

My background is in art and accounting. Art, of course, is my passion, but accounting offered a job to pay the bills, I worked as a bookkeeper and had the flexibility as a single mom to work from home as well.  In order to get ScentsAbility going, I had to do research and learn how to make candles. It took a couple of tries to get it right, but I eventually got there.  ScentsAbility is now endorsed by the Candle Makers Association. 

Being a single mom, the provider, the nurturer, the advocate and having the resources to provide a productive life for Jessica has been the greatest challenge. I had to be a tiger, but in the end, it is paying off for her.

I am tenacious, I don't give up and willing to fight and help others along the way. I am compassionate, hardworking and resourceful. 

Not giving up on Jessica and helping her reach her potential and thrive is my greatest accomplishment. Although it has not always been easy, I am proud of myself for always finding the strength to keep going.

The past year has led me to the point of having the confidence to reach out and ask for help. I would like to do more public speaking to spread the word about ScentsAbility. I have just finished my business plan to bring more traffic into the store, which includes hosting painting Events and parties, which will not only bring people into the store, but will serve as a two-way learning experience for both my staff and the community.

Jessica is the light of my life - she is pure love. She has had such a hard road to travel, and yet she is always happy. Keeping her light shining and giving her purpose to secure an independent full life, along with helping her friends, is inspiration enough. Additionally the positive and supportive input for John, my partner keeps me going. 

My legacy is simply this, someone who gave not only my daughter Jess, but kids with intellectual disabilities, a purpose, a group home and a good life with a career path and the sustainability for an independent life.
