Ann Johnstone, M.Ed.
I chose this career path because
While I originally had plans to become a counselor full-time, I was offered an opportunity to be an instructor at Stone Child Community College, a tribal college. My parents were both teachers and it felt like the right fit for me. I have been an instructor at Stone Child for the last 26 years!
I am a Human Services Instructor and teach courses in Addiction Counseling, World Public Health and Peer Counseling Certificate for Trauma in the Community, Peer Healing, Grief, Loss, and Addiction.
I prepared for this career by
I received a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Montana State University Northern and, from the same institution, I have an M.Ed. in Counseling. I also almost completed an Ed.D. in Education.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
Right out of high school, I had 5 children then got divorced. I remarried and had another child and after becoming widowed I decided to pursue my education and went to college. Life certainly presented many challenges that I have had to overcome - I lost 2 children, my husband and my dad in 4 years and I recovered from an eating disorder.
My greatest strength(s)
I am a good counselor and teacher and I have a strong ability to connect with people.
My greatest accomplishment to date
My greatest accomplishment is learning and growing everyday and having the inner strength to complete my inner and outer journey.
My personal/professional goals
I used to teach 5 classes, however now I am moving into program development at a higher level and I am going to be running some grants. If the opportunity presents itself, I would like to move into a broader scale on the community level. I am excited about developing a Capstone, 40 hour weekend workshop for a Native Peer Counseling Cert. and getting it online.
What/Who has inspired me the most
I work with a person who is an artist who has such a deep connection to her Creator. She inspires me and gives me a different perspective on the way I think and opens me up to new experiences and thoughts.
I most want to be known/remembered for
I want my 4 children to look at my life as an example to fill their own lives with promise and take advantage of what is out there.
I enjoy the following hobbies/interests
I love to read, exercise, do yoga and walk.
