I chose this career path because
I was a secretary for a small machine shop. The company split up during an economic downturn. One of the owners asked me which part of the business was most profitable, I said it was the grinding work; he then had me take the grinding work we was doing at that time and start a new company and run it while he ventured into other industries. After several years as the business grew, I asked him if i could by him out. Twenty-six years later and many more capabilities, I have 12 employees and am still trying to build a successful company.
I prepared for this career by
I run a woman-owned and family-run business. Over the years, we've incorporated more and more grinding and machining into the business. We've become very skilled at servicing and sharpening industrial blades. We are authorized to do government work. We have a full-time quality control inspector to ensure the best quality.
The biggest challenge I've overcome
Of course, I am in a predominately male-oriented business. As a woman, it was difficult at first, to establish myself in the industry. I was so confident in my work that I started out doing work for free for one month in order to prove myself.
My greatest strength(s)
I am tenacious, hard working and have a good work ethic.
My greatest accomplishment to date
In my first year in the grinding business, I took the company from nothing, to $76,000 and was able to buy out the original owner.
My personal/professional goals
I will be working on landing more accounts that will be using swiss machining. I want to make Superior Grinding and Sales a more turnkey business and eventually hand it down to my children. I want to have the time to go back to my ranch and raise mini ponies. I am also still involved in producing Rodeo shows - our family business for the past 60 years.
What/Who has inspired me the most
My family has inspired me; for 60 years, they've been involved in producing rodeo shows. My colleagues have also inspired me; I have been so fortunate to have been trained by some wonderful people who have shared a wealth of knowledge with me.
I most want to be known/remembered for
I want to be remembered for having a good work ethic. I have always been fair to my employees and customers. I have raised a wonderful family and have been a committed church member.
I participate in the following organizations/memberships
I am a member of The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. In addition, my father and grandfather are in the Rodeo Hall of Fame.
I support the missions of these charities/volunteer my time
I support the Special Olympics and my local church.
I enjoy the following hobbies/interests
I produce professional rodeo shows; this has been our family business for 60 years. I own, and live on, a 900-acre ranch.
